Review: All of This is True by Lygia Day PeñaflorAll of This Is True by Lygia Day Peñaflor

Miri Tan loved the book Undertow like it was a living being. So when she and her friends went to a book signing to meet the author, Fatima Ro, they concocted a plan to get close to her, even if her friends won’t admit it now. As for Jonah, well—Miri knows none of that was Fatima’s fault.

Soleil Johnston wanted to be a writer herself one day. When she and her friends started hanging out with her favorite author, Fatima Ro, she couldn’t believe their luck—especially when Jonah Nicholls started hanging out with them, too. Now, looking back, Soleil can’t believe she let Fatima manipulate her and Jonah like that. She can’t believe that she got used for a book.

Penny Panzarella was more than the materialistic party girl everyone at the Graham School thought she was. She desperately wanted Fatima Ro to see that, and she saw her chance when Fatima asked the girls to be transparent with her. If only she’d known what would happen when Fatima learned Jonah’s secret. If only she’d known that the line between fiction and truth was more complicated than any of them imagined. . . .

I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

When I first picked up All of This is True, I didn’t really know much about the story. It felt like one of those books that I would enjoy more if I went into it blind, so I just went ahead and started reading. I was totally right. Going into this book without knowing a ton about the plot is a great experience. That being said, I’m going to try to review this book without giving away much of the structure or plot.

All of This is True tells the story of a group of teens that find a way to befriend their favorite author. (Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it?) The story is not told in a traditional novel format. Instead, it is presented through the use of multiple medias, from numerous perspectives….except those of the characters you want to hear from most. (Why are authors always torturing us so???) I am a sucker for interesting book formats, so I absolutely loved this presentation. It sucked me right into the story and I stayed up way past my bedtime, unable to stop turning the pages.

While I really enjoyed this book, I wish that the issue of fiction versus reality had been handled a bit differently. The parallels between the two seemed too clear cut to me, and therefore made it very easy for me to guess the twist and see the ending coming from a mile away. I feel that if the lines between fiction and reality had been blurred a bit more, it could have added another layer of dimension, mystery, and tension to the story.

All in all, however, this book really surprised me in quite a wonderful way. It is dark and twisted and full of intrigue. The plot is close enough to something that could happen in real life that it makes you reevaluate who you can really trust. I really loved everything about it – from the concept to the execution and everything in between. It was such a unique idea and was presented in a way that truly sets it apart from the masses. It really is one of a kind.
4 Stars

Blog Tour: Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco | Review and Giveaway

Review: After reading (and loving) Stalking Jack the Ripper last fall, I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of Hunting Prince Dracula. I am happy to say that Kerri Maniscalco did not disappoint with her sequel to one of my most enjoyable reads of 2016. Hunting Prince Dracula is significantly longer than Stalking Jack the Ripper, and I think this length caused the book to have a bit of a slow […]
