An unforgettable tale of two friends on their Grand Tour of 18th-century Europe who stumble upon a magical artifact that leads them from Paris to Venice in a dangerous manhunt, fighting pirates, highwaymen, and their feelings for each other along the way.
Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.
But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.
Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.
Witty, romantic, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is a sumptuous romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.
Hi everyone! I’m here today to introduce you to the amazing cast of characters that you will meet in The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee. These characters are fun and vibrant and they will make you wish they would jump right off the page and be your friends in real life. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue tells the story of Monty, his best friend Percy, and his sister Felicity, as they embark on a Grand Tour of Europe – and wherever Monty is, shenanigans are bound to ensue. Make sure you grab this book when it releases later this month, because these characters are more than meets the eye and you will want to get to know their secrets!
Monty:Monty is the narrator of our story – a trouble-making teen who can’t seem to take anything seriously. Although he doesn’t like to admit it, his name is actually Henry Montague, and at the end of his Grand Tour he will inherit not only his father’s name and title, but his job and responsibilities as well. Anything that doesn’t involve drinking, dalliances, and Percy sounds like an absolute nightmare to Monty, so he is determined to make his last year with his best friend count.
A few words about Monty (from Monty himself):
“It’s a burden, you know….Being this good-looking. Not a soul can keep their hands off me.”
“My hair grows so thick and dark and ruffles so handsomely that I refuse to cover it until it ceases to be all or any of those things.”
And from Felicity:
“You’re the kind of pair that makes everyone around them feel as though they’re missing out on a private joke.”
Percy:Percy Newton is many things, but he is first and foremost Monty’s best friend. Percy hasn’t had a life as easy as Monty has, unfortunately. He has been raised by his aunt and uncle since infancy, when his father brought him home from a trip to Barbados, and then passed away shortly after. With dark skin and no title, Percy has had to work hard for success in his life, but after their Grand Tour, he is headed off to law school in Holland. Percy is carrying a secret burden, however, and even the boy that knows him best will be shaken to his core when it is revealed.
Here’s what Monty has to say about his best friend:
“The great tragic love story of Percy and me is neither great nor truly a love story, and is tragic only for its single-sidedness.”
“…not that it’s a particularly noteworthy arse, but it’s Percy’s, which is what makes it very much worth the noting.”
” …he’s clinging to the seams, with no title, a gentry family, and the darkest skin of anyone who isn’t minding the refreshments. Most people we meet either gape openly like he’s fine art on display or pretend he doesn’t exist.”
Felicity:Monty’s younger sister Felicity always has her nose stuck in a smutty romance novel. She has begged for an education her entire life, and she is finally getting her wish and being sent to a finishing school. She is set to accompany Monty and Percy on their Grand Tour before she begins school. Felicity is more than meets the eye, however, and she is about to prove to the boys that they could not have survived their Tour without her.
Some words from Monty about his sister:
“Contrary thing that she is, she’s spent years begging for an education and now that it’s finally handed to her, she’s dug in her heels like a stubborn mule.”
“She’s a fierce, stubborn creature when she wants to be, and, I begrudgingly allow, it can be glorious.”
“My little sister has inherited from my father the knack for making me a self-conscious fool about everything.”
