I am currently on a big work trip, so I had to pre-write a couple weeks’ worth of Top 5 Wednesday posts. Since the November topics weren’t posted before I left, I decided to check out some past T5W topics from before I started my blog. This week I am going to be discussing the topic from March 18 – Bookish Habits. We all have our own weird little quirks that we always do while we are reading, so I thought it would be fun to share some of mine with you today.
5. I always have to finish a chapter before I can stop reading.
I think this is a common bookish habit – the need to finish a chapter before putting the book down. I just really need to feel like I am at a proper breaking point before I can walk away from my book. There is a reason the author ended a chapter at a certain point, and I feel like that is the only acceptable place for me to stop reading. If I know I only have a certain amount of time to read and I won’t be able to finish a chapter, I probably won’t end up reading during that time.
4. I will contort myself into whatever position necessary so I don’t break the spines of my books.
You know what I’m talking about…holding those paperbacks in weird positions so that you can read what’s written close to the spine without opening the book too far. There is nothing that bugs me more than a broken spine and I will do anything to prevent it. This gets incredibly difficult with those super chunky paperbacks, but I am determined to keep my books as pretty as possible.
3. I sleep with multiple books in my bed with me.
I don’t really know how this started, but I can’t remember the last time I didn’t sleep with a book in my bed. It’s just so convenient. I can read right until I fall asleep at night and then my book is right there next to me when I wake up so I can start reading immediately. I usually have multiple books in bed with me so I have lots of options to read. Thank goodness I have a big bed…
2. I have been known to take 15-20 books with me on a week-long vacation.
I know this sounds crazy, but I typically drive to most of my vacation spots, so I have lots of space to bring as many books as I like. I have a really hard time deciding what books I want to bring with me on vacations, so I always bring a ton of options. I am a very big mood reader so I like to have a lot of choices with me. Oh, and I spend about the same amount of time deciding what books to bring as I do packing for my trip. It can be a very stressful process – I want to make sure I bring the right books!
1. I always read the last sentence of a book before I start reading it.
This is a weird little habit of mine that I have been doing for as long as I can remember. I have no idea why I decided to start doing it, but I don’t think I will ever stop. I think it’s really fun. It makes me wonder what happens throughout the book to get to that end point. I have really only been spoiled once by doing this and that was in Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. But I still had no idea how the characters reached that end point, so the journey through the book was a ton of fun.
What are some of your bookish habits? Do you do any of the silly things I do?
When you develop weird bookish habits…..
…..blame it on the books.
