Wrap Up - TBR - T5W (5)

Happy Halloween! October has come to a close, so it is time for another monthly wrap up. Where the heck did October go??? I feel like I was just writing my TBR a few days ago. Overall, I had a lot of fun with my reading this month, and I managed to read a whole bunch of great books. I would consider this a very successful reading month! To see if I accomplished my reading goals for the month, check out what I put on my October TBR.

Here’s what I read during the month of October:

Through the Woods by Emily Carroll (Goodreads)

My Rating: 3.5/5 stars

This was a fun little graphic novel compilation of 5 short horror stories. It was perfect for getting in the Halloween spirit. The stories weren’t scary, but they were definitely pretty creepy. The only thing that I didn’t like about this was that there was no explanation for the spooky stuff that was happening in the stories. I understand that that is supposed to add to the mystery of it, but I tend to not like it when books use that technique.

At the Corner of Magnetic and Main by Meg Welch Dendler (Goodreads)

My Rating: 4.25/5 stars

Oh my goodness I was so surprised by this book! I read it for review and I was part of the blog tour for this book! Check out my blog tour post for my review plus an interview I did with the author, Meg Welch Dendler!

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman (Goodreads)

My Rating: 3.5/5 stars

I’m pretty sure I will always enjoy anything that Neil Gaiman writes. I did enjoy this book but I wasn’t totally enthralled. The writing was so magical, in true Gaiman style, but this book left a lot of questions unanswered. Again, I know that’s the whole point of the book, but I just like getting answers and I don’t really like books that leave me hanging.

The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness (Goodreads)

My Rating: 5/5 stars

I would give this book 1,000,000 out of 5 stars if I could. I really, really loved it.This was one of my most highly anticipated books this year, and Patrick Ness did not disappoint. I will be doing a review about this one soon, but I have a lot to say so it is taking me quite a while to get all my thoughts down.

The Vault of Dreamers by Caragh M. O’Brien (Goodreads)

My Rating: 5/5 stars

Wow, this book totally blew me away. I didn’t really know much about the plot going into it, and I was completely surprised by the twists and turns it took. This was the fourth book I’ve read by Caragh M. O’Brien and it did not disappoint. She has a way of creating twists that I absolutely never see coming. And she creates these awesome dark and twisted characters that completely creep me out. I am so excited for book two in this series, The Rule of Mirrors, to be released in 2016.

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake (Goodreads)

My Rating: 3/5 stars

This book was…ok. I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but it didn’t really make an impact on me. It just didn’t feel realistic (and I know how crazy that sounds – the book is about a ghost hunter falling in love with a teenage ghost – how realistic can it be?) and I had trouble suspending my disbelief for this one.

Drowned City: Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans by Don Brown (Goodreads)

My Rating: 5/5 stars

This was a graphic novel about Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in the summer of 2006. I took an entire course on Hurricane Katrina and the politics surrounding the relief efforts for my degree in college. This was a wonderful reminder of an important part in our country’s history. If you are interested in sociological or political topics at all, this would be a cool one to pick up.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling (Goodreads)

My Rating: 5/5 stars

Do I really need to explain to you why I gave this 5/5 stars again?

Rat Queens Volume One: Sass & Sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch (Goodreads)

My Rating: 3.5/5 stars

This wasn’t in my plan for the month, but I decided to pick it up on a whim for the Dewey’s 24-hour Read-A-Thon. I’m glad I gave it a try. This was a pretty cool graphic novel, but I don’t think it is quite as amazing as people say it is. I think it might be a series that grows on me, however, so I will definitely be checking out the next volumes.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (Goodreads)

My Rating: 5/5 stars

Wow. Wow wow wow. This book was such an adventure. It is a work of art, from the cover design to the pages inside to the words written on those pages. The writing is incredible, the story is beautiful, and reading it felt like holding a masterpiece in my hands. I’m still collecting my thoughts on this one, but keep an eye out for a review soon.

I also listened to the audiobook of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling and flipped through the absolutely GORGEOUS Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Illustrated Edition by J.K. Rowling and Jim Kay this month.

Currently Reading:

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Eragon [audiobook] by Christopher Paolini

Soulless by Gail Carriger

What did you read this month? Did you find any new favorite books?
