This week’s topic is pretty interesting, because obviously my favorite thing about my bookshelf is that it is covered in books! But I do have a few knick-knacks that I have collected over the years that make my bookshelf unique. I like this topic because it is giving us a peek at what everyone in the T5W family is really like. We all obviously love to read, but the items you collect and keep on your shelves show what other things are important to you as well. It’s nice to be able to share something besides our passion for books with each other. So here they are – my favorite things on my bookshelf that aren’t books…
5. My Lava Lamp
This is a silly one, but I really love my lava lamp. I am a hippie at heart and I have always wanted to live during the 1960s and 70s. I always wanted a lava lamp of my own, and it was probably one of the first things I bought to decorate my apartment when I moved out on my own.
4. Mr. Potato Head Hockey Player
This sounds ridiculous, but I have a mini Mr. Potato Head figurine that is playing hockey and wearing a jersey from my college. I got it during a giveaway at one of the hockey games I went to at my school. My friends and I loved to go to all the hockey games, and seeing that little figurine reminds me of all the fun we had cheering on our team.
3. Box from Budapest
When I was in college, my roommate studied abroad for a semester. She brought back a little carved box from Budapest that is shaped like a book and engraved with my name. You can catch a glimpse of it in the picture above. My friend also put little trinkets from England inside, like a Ringo Starr guitar pick and a flattened penny from Penny Lane. She knows I love The Beatles and I think it made her giggle to give me a penny from Penny Lane.
I have two pictures that mean a lot to me sitting on my bookshelf. One is a picture of me and my best friend. The picture shows us smiling with our American Girl dolls in second grade, and then again at our high school graduation. I met my best friend when I was five, and we went to school together all the way from Kindergarten through college. We live far apart now, and it has been quite an adjustment getting used to not seeing her every day. But maybe someday in the future we will add another picture to my shelf of us at another milestone in our lives.
The other picture is of me with my grandparents before I headed off to my senior prom. This is probably one of the last photos I was able to take with both of them. I was lucky enough to grow up seeing my grandparents almost every single day, and they were the greatest people I have ever known. I miss them every day.
1. My kitty!
My little man is my roommate, my snuggle buddy when I’m reading, and my best bud. I can’t help it – I just love animals, and I am completely obsessed with my cat. I made a very knee-jerk decision about three years ago when I visited the Humane Society near me and came home with a kitten that I had no idea how to care for and couldn’t afford. Well, that was the best stupid decision I have ever made and I would do it again in a heartbeat!
What are some of your favorite things on your bookshelf?
When your shelves are so full of books that there is barely room for anything else…..
…..blame it on the books.
